Tree-mendous

Those of us who live in a green and pleasant land, well saturated, with no shortage of forests, can be unaware of the vital importance trees and root systems play in maintaining that landscape. Agroforestry replenishes the fertility and water-holding capacity of soil and is all about putting the right tree in the right place for the right purpose. Are we planting trees for food, water, or fuel? Is the focus protecting the soil or capturing carbon dioxide? Are we looking for a positive effect on a particular crop? For many of us these questions don’t arise but for those in rural Malawi, they have become critical for survival.

Compact have successfully laid the foundation for healthy communities with the solar water systems, composting, farming, and nutrition training but the longevity and success will be in the appropriate reforestation of an area. To get this going we have ordered a variety of trees totaling 1,000 to be planted at our most recent location of Kawiri in December. The cost of adding this element to our existing program is considerable with site visits, saplings, delivery, planting, addition equipment like a drone, computer, professional training, ongoing mentoring, and regular staffing. As we enter the Fall / Autumn period and approach year-end, please keep this work in mind. When the Psalmist spoke about the righteous in Psalm 1 being like a tree firmly planted by streams of water it was more than poetry, it was observation, science, and common sense.

The problem is not supply but distribution. God has given us all we need to alter the course of human suffering. Max Lucado

Patrick Takes The Lead

Patrick Singoyi is a Malawian board member and Nutrition and Science Graduate who will be leading the nutrition training in Kawiri from October 1st -11th. There are no quick solutions and only hands on training will continue to steer these people to a better life. Patrick will cover the basics of nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, processing storage, dietary diversification, cooking and much more.
