Nursery Takes Root

By Chisomo Faith Mainje, Executive Director

At the heart of Kawiri Village in Nkhotakota District, a project is blossoming, one that not only brings the promise of a greener environment but also demonstrates the power of collective effort. This community, driven by the desire to restore their land and combat environmental degradation, has now set up a successful tree nursery. On June 10, 2024, members of the community gathered to establish a modest yet vital space and by using locally sourced materials, constructed a grass fence to protect a tree nursery.

Compact bought the tree seeds and planting tubes, while the community worked diligently, filling 2,495 tubes with nutrient-rich soil, preparing them for the precious seedlings that would soon follow from seeds sown on a raised bed of soil. On October 17, 2024, the nursery buzzed with activity as the tubes were carefully filled with saplings.

Now, with the rainy season on the horizon, these saplings will soon be transplanted into the broader landscape, where they will take root and grow into sturdy trees. Led by their Lead Farmer, who also contributed 200 tubes to the cause on top of the 2,495 tubes provided by Compact, they have prepared the planting pits in readiness for the rainy season when they will be able to transplant the saplings.

Now the people of Kawiri await the rains with a sense of anticipation and accomplishment. Having provided land and tilled the soil, their hearts are invested in the future, and soon the landscape will reflect their labor with trees that grow as symbols of hope and renewal.

This initiative is a shining example of the strength that can emerge when local people come together to combat the challenges they face, especially in areas deeply affected by climate change.
