Cholera Outbreak

Malawi is now facing the worst cholera outbreak ever recorded. It is a consequence of the breakdown in waste management, pollution on land, through waterways, and in the air. Malawi has been dealing with a cholera outbreak since March 2022, infected almost 27,000 people nationwide and killed 990, according to the Ministry of Health. (24th January 2023) Cholera is a water-borne disease caused by a bacterium Vibrio cholerae which shows itself in watery diarrhea and vomiting, and can lead to severe dehydration, kidney injury or death. Clean water is crucial in preventing the spread of this deadly disease. A Word of Thanks

There are many people we want and need to thank for their work at Compact ranging from financial support to those who donate office space.  In this issue we offer a word of thanks to Jennifer Jones (Ontario) and Kinder Jones (British Columbia) who manage the financial administration in Canada. Canadian dollars converted to US dollars, converted to Malawian Kwacha. Receipts issued in Kwacha converted back to dollars must then balance the chequing account. It takes hours of work which is backed by the professional services of Amarjit Nienkaemper who must satisfy CRA (The Tax Man). All this would be much harder if it wasn’t for the good bookkeeping of our Malawian team. Thank you.
