Solar Powered Borehole
Compact is delighted to announce that we will be engaging the services of Kapitapa Borehole Drillers (KDB) for the solar powered borehole at Ndalama. A solar powered pump will continually supply water to two 5,000 L tanks allowing for gravity fed water to the community via several standpipes, spreading the distribution and providing easier access for irrigating fields. This system greatly reduces the burden of women and children who are responsible for manually pumping or collecting water. Preparations start in late July and drilling in August when the water table is at its lowest. The cost is approximately $25,000 USD which is considerably more than the traditional hand pump but provides a superior service to the community and will serve 1,500 -1,800 people or 200 homes. KBD, based in Zomba, is a bone fide member of the National Construction Industry Council NCIC and fully registered with all other related legal entities.

People Who Care
My wife and I recently attended a funeral in Vancouver at which I shared in the eulogy. A portion of the story was dedicated to the gentleman’s kindness in saving all his spare medical supplies from his own treatment and asking that they be distributed in Malawi. This testimony has brought a great deal of interest as people have begun to notify me of similar supplies languishing in their homes after treatment. We recently took delivery of two totes worth of supplies from Sheila Crompton which we will happily deliver to Dr. David McCarty at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Blantyre. This is not the work of Compact, but we are happy to assist others in their service to humanity. It costs around $75 per extra bag of luggage which we believe is great value.
