Power To The People

Deforestation

As with all politics in every country, the idea of serving the people can become spurious as government departments work to fulfill their mandate. For many of us, we fail to see the logic in some decisions as the collateral damage or net effect is questionable. Malawi is desperate to develop its infrastructure, be that roads, water or power and every opportunity must be taken which is understandable.

In late 2022 Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) were awarded a 750 million kw ($440,000 USD) grant for the implementation of two transmission lines in the Central Northern regions. However, it was devastating to witness the mass destruction of ancient trees along the roadside that have provided shade for man and beast. Not only that but these trees play an essential role in locking water in the ground via their root systems. One of the main causes of drought and famine in Malawi is the long-term deforestation by local people looking for firewood or corporations wanting to improve services.

At our new site in Kawiri we will be working to extend their growing season through improving the soil through compost, root systems and land water retention techniques.

Our world is increasingly ONE country.

Pile Composting

There are several ways to make compost and at the new site in Kawiri we have opted for pile composting. They are not difficult to create and much easier to work during the 8-10 week process. Around 30 people took two hours to make this 5m long pile and they were shocked to hear that this one pile could save between $600 -$900 in fertilizer. Plus, this compost is not poisoning the ground and food they eat.

At Kawiri we gave the simple message that healthy soil means healthy crops which leads to healthy people. Thank you to all those who support monthly via PayPal.
