Grassroots Project
This year we’re introducing our grassroots project, which is rooted in the critical need to focus on basic needs. At Compact, we have seen many individuals and communities struggling with the lack of access to the necessities of life such as clean water and food. It is our belief that addressing these fundamentals is crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty and creating a better future for rural Malawians. We’re working closely with local communities to ensure that our efforts are tailored to meet their specific needs and are sustainable. Through these programs, we provide access to clean water by way of a solar powered borehole, promote food security through sustainable farming, and offer nutritional training to promote healthy living. We began this new approach in Ndalama on February 23rd and the program should be completed with a solar borehole in August / September 2023. It’s important not to drill too early after the rains so that the water table can drop sufficiently, and boreholes do not dry up. For more information visit our “current project” on the website.
“Plans are of little importance but planning is essential”

Michael Kafere
Michael is a subsistence farmer from Ndalama Village who, between himself and wife Agnes, support a family of 10. They have donated land for a 2-year period on which Compact can carry out permaculture training and plant a demonstration garden. It takes Agnes and some of the children 30 minutes to collect 20 litres of water from the river Bua. This they currently share with the local wildlife reservation who are wanting to secure the site for themselves. The solar powered borehole will transform their water collecting routine, allowing more time for other things like homework or reading.
